On-target applications, near-zero volatility make for neighbor-friendly weed control

In the Southeast, growers often find their cotton fields adjacent to diverse crops such as peanuts, rice, watermelons and sweet corn. Being a good neighbor means choosing a weed control program that keeps your fields clean while ensuring your herbicide applications stay on target.

According to farmer and consultant Rodney Joiner of Edison, Georgia, the best way to keep neighbors happy is to avoid herbicide drift issues. He accomplishes that by using the Enlist® weed control system for his Enlist® cotton.

“We’ve been using the Enlist system for a long time, since it first came out,” Joiner said. “With Enlist One herbicide, we don't have the drift issues. We don't have the volatilization issues. It stays where we spray it.”

Joiner mainly grows cotton, corn and peanuts, usually a third of each covering his roughly 2,500 acres. He also occasionally grows soybeans and grain sorghum.

An important issue for Joiner is being able to grow cotton and peanuts next to each other without damaging either crop with herbicide movement.

“It’s critical for us to avoid drift with cotton and peanuts,” Joiner said. “Crop safety is a big issue.”

When peanuts are planted alongside dicamba cotton, farmers worry about dicamba drifting from cotton into peanuts or 2,4-Db moving from peanuts into dicamba cotton. Sprayer tank cleanout is also a concern because dicamba residue could damage peanuts.

Joiner solves that problem with the Enlist weed control system and Enlist One® herbicide. Sprayer maintenance is much easier because he never has to put dicamba in his tank. He saves time and eases concerns by using Enlist One herbicide according to the label.

With the Enlist system, we don’t have to worry about cleaning dicamba out of the sprayer. It’s easy to clean Enlist One out of the tank. It’s easier to grow cotton and peanuts next to each other if you don’t have to worry about herbicide contamination or drift.

Confidence with Enlist One herbicide

Joiner has been using Enlist One herbicide for about a decade on his own farm and evaluating it on other acres as a consultant. He says it offers excellent weed control and the tank-mix flexibility needed to manage the continued challenge of weed resistance.

“We must keep the weed seed bank down,” Joiner said. “Palmer amaranth is particularly tough to control. If the seed bank builds up, you’ll be fighting Palmer amaranth for years.”

To keep fields clean, Joiner starts the cotton season by planting the crop and following immediately with preemergence residual herbicides. After emergence, he comes back with a tank mix of Enlist One and glyphosate herbicides. Two weeks later, he applies a combination of glyphosate and glufosinate herbicides.

In 2026, a wet spring prevented his preemergence application, but his postemergence applications, anchored by Enlist One, kept weeds at bay. By August, his fields were lush and Palmer amaranth was controlled.

“The cotton has stayed pretty well clean,” Joiner said. “After we spray Enlist One, the canopy is the best weed control.”

Excellent weed control, combined with on-target applications, make the Enlist weed control system and Enlist One herbicide the neighborly choice in the Southeast.

“We’ve never had a drift or volatilization issue with Enlist One, and that’s really important for being a good neighbor,” Joiner said.
