Experiencing Enlist

Trey Koger

On our farm, we raise corn, cotton, soybeans, rice and peanuts. It’s been a family farming operation for more than 30 years. We follow a pretty stringent crop rotation and use several modes of action to manage and prevent weed resistance on our farm. Managing glyphosate-resistant pigweed has been a big issue for our farm. We’re looking for new tools, technologies and techniques to help us. We believe the Enlist™ system will be one tool that can help us manage resistant weeds.

I was very pleased with the Enlist cotton system from both a weed control and crop tolerance standpoint. The Enlist system gives us an effective postemergence over-the-top option to control Palmer pigweed in cotton. We haven’t had this since the early days of glyphosate in Roundup Ready cotton when it was still effective. The Enlist system is also effective on other difficult-to-control broadleaf weeds such as horseweed. The crop tolerance pre and post is excellent. We can minimize or virtually eliminate tank-cleanout issues when we follow the guidelines provided by Dow AgroSciences.

Healthy field of Enlist™ cotton after application of Enlist Duo® herbicide*

Enlist Duo brings an important weed management tool. It’s a postemergence tool that we have to have. It controls the tough and glyphosate-resistant weeds.

In addition to weed control, any time we bring a new technology, one of the key components is crop tolerance. With Enlist Duo, there was excellent crop tolerance. We saw no injury. The crop tolerance was excellent. I just have to say, I never thought I would see the day that you’d be able to spray 2,4-D over cotton. The crop tolerance was excellent and comparable with other herbicide programs we’ve used.

It has been a wet spring, and our corn, cotton and rice are off to a good start.

Wet Field Conditions

Planting went well. In the Enlist cotton plot, there were already weeds present at planting. We’ll apply our post-application of Enlist Duo at the end of next week, if weather allows.
