I farm and operate a farrow-to-finish hog operation with my brother in central Iowa. We are fourth-generation farmers. We take pride in the products we’re raising. Seeing the process from start to finish — planting to harvest — is rewarding. We want to be top-producing farmers, which is one reason I’m interested in new technologies. I first used the Enlist™ system in a corn research plot. This year, I’m interested in using it in soybeans for a different mode of action and option for weed control.

We wrapped up harvest last Friday. Our Enlist soybeans were right in there with the competitors. They were well-matched and held their own. I like that Enlist is available in good genetics and varieties that perform well for us. Plus, the multiple modes of action for weed control is important. We’re excited about the Enlist system.

Our main driver is profitability. I want to get the yield and manage weed resistance. The Enlist™ soybeans performed for us, the chemistry worked well and it was easy to use. I can see using both Enlist soybeans and Enlist corn in the future.

Enlist Duo® herbicide was able to provide: 1. good coverage; and 2. excellent control. My expectation going into the season was that we were going to improve our weed control and have as close to 100 percent control as we could. And we were able to accomplish that.
We used several different products this year — several different modes of action. Enlist was as good as or better than all the products that we had.

We had a really good application window. There were a few challenges with it being hot and dry, but it worked wonderfully. It’s just a few days after application, and you already see some activity. I’m really happy with the application — it provided 100 percent coverage and 100 percent control.

When we finished applying Enlist Duo, the applicator and myself, we got out and we talked a little bit. We reviewed how the application went. We are impressed that there was no movement, no drift. It did what it is advertised to do. It’s important when you put a product on that it stays where you want it.

Everything is growing good. I will be scouting the Enlist beans again later this week. We expect to apply Enlist Duo this weekend.

We just finished getting the Enlist beans into the ground a couple of days ago. We haven’t had any emergence yet, but they will be coming through in the next day or two.
We’ve got a nice spell of weather right now with 80s to 90s followed by 70s and 80s. Luckily, we’ve had enough moisture that if it doesn’t rain, we will still be OK. We just need the sun and warmth to bring things along.

The wet weather has kept us out of the field. We hope to be back at planting by Sunday. Our corn is planted, and we have a good start on beans.

Our weed concerns are very typical for central and north-central Iowa — waterhemp is the predominant weed that you’re always fighting. We are possibly seeing some resistance. It’s definitely getting harder to control. Luckily, we don’t have the resistance issues like the South. We try to be proactive in our weed control and always make sure we have other tools.
Enlist is appealing to me because it provides a different mode of action and option for weed control. We’re familiar with 2,4-D and glyphosate, so the combination is appealing to me.
